OpenAI co-founder Ilya Sutskever, who departed the AI startup last month, has launched a new AI company named Safe Superintelligence (SSI).

“I am starting a new company,” Sutskever announced on X on Wednesday. “We will pursue safe superintelligence with a single focus, one goal, and one product.”

Previously, Sutskever was OpenAI’s chief scientist and co-led the Superalignment team with Jan Leike, who also left in May to join competitor AI firm Anthropic. The Superalignment team, which aimed to steer and control AI systems, was dissolved following Sutskever and Leike’s departures.

Sutskever’s new venture will maintain a strong emphasis on safety. An SSI account posted on X, “SSI is our mission, our name, and our entire product roadmap, because it is our sole focus. Our singular focus means no distraction by management overhead or product cycles, and our business model ensures safety, security, and progress are insulated from short-term commercial pressures.”

Sutskever is founding the company with Daniel Gross, who led Apple’s AI and search efforts, and Daniel Levy, formerly of OpenAI. The company will have offices in Palo Alto, California, and Tel Aviv.

Sutskever was one of the OpenAI board members involved in the attempt to oust Sam Altman in November. Following Altman’s abrupt removal and subsequent reinstatement, Sutskever publicly apologized for his involvement.

“I deeply regret my participation in the board’s actions,” Sutskever posted on X on November 20. “I never intended to harm OpenAI. I love everything we’ve built together and I will do everything I can to reunite the company.”
